The story is pretty garbled, but apparently the woman herself has explained that she didn't actually disarm him - two men had tackled him as he was fumbling for another clip for the gun, and she grabbed the clip away from him. Still a brave act, but she didn't do it alone. The young intern who gave first aid to the congresswoman is a hero too - I'm awed by his calm and courage, running TOWARD the sounds of gunfire.
Ah well, that would be the usual standard of Aussie journalism, I'm afraid, they had her grabbing the clip BEFORE the men grabbed the perp. Sounds better that way. At least they didn't assume she was a granny!! There is a very sad story here of a mother and two boys trapped in a car in the Queensland floods - and it had me in floods. The older boy made sure his younger brother was rescued first. Greater love hath no man - and that thirteen year old died a man in my book. Courage is an extraordinary thing.
American journalism is no better - the coverage of this story was absolutely awful, with every network trying to be first instead of accurate. And btw, the woman who grabbed the clip has silver hair and is of granny age, if not actually a granny. Right now my heart goes out to a particular one of the wounded - the woman who took her 9 year old neighbor with her to meet her congresswoman. A kind gesture, taking an interest in a precocious child's interest in politics, ended so, so horribly.
Cartoon is right on.
ReplyDeleteAmen, Tom Tomorrow. Such a horrible, avoidable tragedy.
ReplyDeleteWrite your congresspeople. Please.
ReplyDeleteSums it up very nicely - even from here in the Great Southern Land.
ReplyDeleteWhen will they ever learn?
Gae, in Callala Bay, in absolute AWE of the woman who disarmed him, according to our newspapers.
