My 6th Unbirthday!

It's the 6 year anniversary of my pesky little brain thang.

Life has been pretty darn eventful since that adventure.  My employer went out of business, I found another job, quickly learned to hate that job, my mother passed away, my son became a father, I got screwed over by a bad boss and quit my hated job, Sophie came into my life, my daughter got married, I moved to Asheville and then back to Florida when my daughter became a mother, and I've been flailing around a bit trying to make a living in real estate.

Every year on my unbirthday I get myself a little something - I buy myself an unbirthday present. This year I was fresh out of ideas about an unbirthday present.  I couldn't think of a damn thing I wanted.  I've been interviewing for salaried jobs (or as one of my favorite real estate coaches puts it, a "Job-Job") and had no fewer than THREE interviews for a job I wanted - assistant to the president of a commercial development company. The last interview was Monday afternoon, and I left it feeling like I really would like to work there.

Basically, all I wanted for my unbirthday was a Job-Job and a steady paycheck, hopefully in the form of something I really wanted to do.

Today I received a call from a headhunter - a big utility company wanted to interview me  on Monday for a job doing their utility easements. That would be a pretty good Job-Job - the commute was a little far, and utility easements are a bit of a yawn, but I really miss having a steady paycheck, so we set up an interview for Monday at 1.

Less than an hour after that call, my phone rang again.  I was offered the job with the development company!  A 15 minute commute, interesting work, I really like the man who will be my boss, decent money, good benefits, and did I mention that 15 minute commute?  12 if I hit green lights! I will start on March 11th, which gives me time to wrap up some stuff I need to wrap, and get my car serviced, and basically get my life in order to return to the ol' 8 to 5 and a steady paycheck.

So a very merry unbirthday to ME!

I talked to my son today - actually, I left him a voicemail about the job and missed his return call, so he left ME a voicemail - it was Supergirl screaming "CONGRATULATIONS!!!"

We connected for a brief real conversation an hour later.  My son is so modest about his accomplishments, he mentions things in an offhand way and I don't really have the details, but his career in beer is really turning into something.   He's constantly surprised by how people in the hospitality industry know his name and approach him about projects. I'm very proud of him.  He's incredibly busy, teaching beer classes at the community college, doing special projects like "beer talks," on the road now and then proctoring Cicerone beer exams, and oh yes, he's still behind the downstairs bar at Wicked Weed a few days a week.  I'd considered doing one of my high speed long weekend trips to visit before I start the new job, but his schedule is too insane. We'll have to settle for Skype.  He has made an amazing career for himself, and I'm a very happy mom.

And of course, Supergirl continues to be all kinds of super. Her third birthday is right around the corner!  She will be three on March 8th.  Her current fascination is dinosaurs, so of course, she has plunged in and made herself an expert (she's a lot like her dad in that way).   My son told me a hilarious story about her careful examination of a toy stegosaurus. She was disturbed by the fact that the toy didn't have any spikes on its tail, because a real stegosaurus would have spikes.  Her father suggested that maybe it didn't have tail spikes because it was a baby, and maybe babies didn't start out with spikes on their tails.  Supergirl considered this for a moment and then asked, "Is that your hypothesis?"

She will be THREE next month.

I cracked up and asked if they've figured out where they are going to send her to preschool yet, because finding a school that can handle her might take some research.

So it's been a very merry unbirthday indeed!  Life is good!  And that's not just my hypothesis.

Congratulations! I've been following your blog for many years and have never posted a comment, but for years I have admired your fortitude, sense of humor, writing skills and political proclivities. I hope your new job is fun and helps ease your financial worries.

Many Happy Returns of the Unbirthday!
And best wishes for the new job.
Supergirl reminds me of Senior Grandson at about the same age (he is now nearly 14, eeeek!). SG asked me if I knew what the word 'reluctant' meant. I gave a simple definition, and he told me I was correct and then asked me how I knew !!
Senior Granddaughter went to an orientation event for next years prospective students at Wollongong University - last I heard she wanted to study as a dietitian specialising in the sporting field. Makes sense, this is the hollow-legged swimmer.

    All the best,

    Gae, in Callala Bay

Oh, Catherine! Happy HAPPY unbirthday! Congratulations on the new job, too. I'm in AVL for the next few days. When does your son work at WW? We've been told by several folks that it's the best place in town for good beer.
    Hugs & happy, happy!

  8. His schedule varies; I'll text him and ask when he's going to be on - it would be great if you can stop in and say hi! It IS the best place in town! It has been wildly successful since it opened a few months ago.

Happy unbirthday, Dear Catherine---I don't remember how I found my way to your blog, but it doesn't seem that I have been reading for over six years. Congratulations and good luck on your Job-Job.

  10. Happy Unbirthday!!! I remember when all that happened, I was in the hospital with my late husband then, checking on blogs while he was sleeping (he always ended up in the hospital in February. LOL). So excited for you with your new job, steady paychecks are a good thing. Though I will tell you, you are an awesome real estate agent! Really grateful that you were doing real estate and were able to help Jordan find his place. They love it there! His girlfriend threw him a surprise b-day party last month and it was fun to go down and see the place furnished and lived in. Thanks again for all your help, and I will be thinking good thoughts for your adventures back into the Job-Job world. :-)

  11. Debbie! So good to hear from you! I somehow lost your email address. I'm SO glad they love that townhouse; I thought the location was absolutely perfect and oh, that kitchen! I'm excited about going back into development work, but I'll miss "the thrill of the hunt" and then finding a great home. I loved working with Jordan and meeting you - I wish all clients were as awesome as you guys!
