I just had to share this tiny video clip that is making its way around the internet. It is a small, personal moment from the President's election night speech.
"Behind you!"
11 year old Sasha noticed the crowd behind the stage, realized they hadn't been greeted, and unhesitatingly reached out to get her father's attention. He instantly bent his head to listen to her, and instantly followed her advice and turned to the people behind him. In that huge, huge triumphal moment, when they were standing on stage before cheering thousands and being seen on TV around the world, Sasha wasn't frozen in the typical 11 year old self consciousness, fretting about her dress or how she looked - she noticed the people behind them and wanted to make sure her father greeted them.
And her father, in the middle of the moment, immediately listened to her, seriously and with respect, and immediately turned and greeted the people behind the stage. That was just a tiny moment, but the communication behind it says so
much about President Obama's relationship with his daughters, and what kind of smart, poised, aware young women they are raising.
I've never been a sappy fangirl about a First Family before, but I truly love these people.
Oh, and Florida finally stopped looking for more Romney votes behind the sofa cushions and certified the results as another win for Pres. Obama. There's that. EDIT: No, apparently the story is that the D's have claimed it as a win, the R's have conceded, and Florida is still counting and hasn't certified it. Thank God this election didn't hinge on the political hacks who manage vote counting here. Now we are just a harmless laughing stock.
Okay, that's it for my drift into political stuff for now. Back to regular programming tomorrow - with, perhaps, yes, maybe, knitting.
I'm so relieved this nightmare election cycle is over with and the President won re-election. Like you, I think they're a wonderful family, and we're so lucky to have such bright, confident, considerate children living in the White House (unlike some we've had recently).
ReplyDeleteI admire the way the Obamas have kept their girls out of the spotlight as much as possible, and the way they behave when they are in the spotlight. Malia is tall, poised, and I'm sure their staff is constantly fighting off magazines wanting her to model stuff. She is always graceful and warm, even as a young teen. Sasha is so tuned in, so expressive - if she's not happy, she doesn't paste on a smile - and that move, grabbing her dad and directing him to greet the people behind them - just slayed me. 11 is such an awkward age, but she was focused outward and noticed people.
