Bill Clinton's speech.
Do watch it, it's inspiring and positive and wonderful. Damn, that man can talk wonky policy and facts and details, and make it inspiring.
The Big Dawg is still AWESOME!! But what struck me when I saw him speak, while I loved what he was saying, was also how good he looks! I remember a few years ago, when he was going through his heart scares, thinking that he looked and sounded puffy, tired and old. I remember thinking he looked really sick, and older than his years. He had bypass surgery and then had to have stents, and then, after investigating ways to stay healthy, went vegan. He looked so vigorous and healthy last night, he's the poster boy for the vegan lifestyle.
I know skeptics will claim he had "work done," or something, but I doubt it. His eyes look age-appropriate, for one thing. And for another, I've been accused of having had "work done" myself. Not really accused, exactly, but it was funny.
A few months ago, after I'd been eating mostly plant based for months, I had coffee with a former colleague - she'd moved away and moved back, just as I had. We had fun catching up, but she kept looking at me, tilting her head this way and that, and finally blurted out, "I have to ask, you look...different. Did you have some work done?"
And I was honestly flabbergasted - I mean, if I were going to have "work done" I think I'd start with having the freaking dent filled. I'd have that sucker puttied or something, and maybe get the screw heads under the skin on my forehead sanded down while we're at it. I don't feel like I need anything else - I like my face, God knows I earned it.
I wasn't offended that she asked, just really puzzled - I asked her if I looked THAT different, and she said I did. And I said something about having lost a few pounds and sleeping better, and maybe that was it - it wasn't until later that I really started wondering if my diet had made visible changes. I don't think it's visible on a day to day basis, but I hadn't seen her in a few years, and apparently it was obvious to her that I looked different, and I suspect that she maybe still thinks I really did have some "work" and didn't want to fess up.
Apparently I have had some work done - but it was done from the inside out. I was just worried about my family history of heart disease, but hey, BONUS!
I was thinking the same thing about Clinton. I put it down to having just watched that footage of Ted Kennedy, but I think you are probably right.
ReplyDeleteDid you see the picture of Hillary watching him? That was pretty cool, too.
I loved the pic of Hillary watching, love her to pieces in general, but I do think she needs a ponytail intervention. (I was so glad somebody apparently intervened with Michelle and her wide belts!)
ReplyDeleteI can see a real difference in Clinton's face - he's 66 years old and looks at least 10 years younger, white hair and all. His color, skin tone, energy, everything is totally different from a couple of years ago around the time of the second heart surgery, when I really thought he was in bad shape. His voice is stronger and younger sounding too.
White hair - hah! Of itself it is NOT ageing, so long as it is healthy.
ReplyDeleteAnd I speak from experience, started with an inch wide streak when I was 16, and 75% grey by 35. In common with my father and his mother (and I suspect his sister, but she is 91 and still blond!) Except for a bit of fooling around with home colour rinses in early 20's, have never bothered about it. Healthy condition and a cut that suits - and I am very lucky that is all I need, I have 'wash and wear' hair.
Young Bill is looking good, even if he is nearly as old as I am (68)

When he was president, I was still a young-ish female federal employee dealing with my own ugly experience with sexual harassment in the workplace. I was so angry at the example he set while in office that I despised Clinton. Now I wish we could just get over with it and re-elect him. I lost my job a year ago, and it ain't pretty out here. Where I live, if you can afford to work part-time for $8 an hour and no benefits, jobs are plentiful. If you need serious wages that you can live on and some health insurance, good luck. I recently watched the American Experience documentary about FDR. I think he and Clinton are two of the most charismatic presidents we have ever had. They both had a way of speaking and giving off that feeling that everything was going to be okay.

He's an impressive person, and an amazing speaker. He is, after all, a Rhodes Scholar, and no mental lightweight. He totally trashed because they wanted the white house so badly, and the chance to seal all of Reagan's and Bush Sr.s and Jr's papers to the year 2050. I spit upon them.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad he gave a plug to the foundation that he's set up, along with his wife, I believe.
