No, seriously, it's freaking cold.

I've been awake since 4 a.m., when the sound of the wind combined with the power blinking on and off woke me up. It was like a cold, dry tropical storm - noisy, and I had an urge to find the flashlight and keep it within reach. By dawn the blinky power had resolved, and the wind has calmed down a bit, but damn, it was windy.

And speaking of Windy - Sophie dealt with the chill in the air by snuggling her little self under the covers, headfirst. Which left the dangerous end pointing out. And I rolled over at 4, awakened by the roaring of the wind and the sound of transformers popping somewhere outside the window, and struggled to consciousness to find that her butt was about three inches beneath my chin. I barely had time to process this frightening situation when: "PFFFFFTTTT!!" First, the sound of the tiny kazoo, then the wave of fragrance.... Yeah, that was pretty much my cue to get up.

My poor Keurig pot was so confused by the power blinking on and off and being asked to work at 4 a.m., we had a tense moment when it just moaned to itself and didn't want to make coffee. Fortunately, it did eventually clear its muddled electronic head and produce the Elixir of Life, because it was very early and I was coping with the cold and wind and power blinking and being farted awake at 4 by a cozy sleeping dog and was standing in front of a dysfunctional coffeemaker as it hummed and did not want to make coffee, and there's only one of those issues that could be swiftly dealt with by a hammer. The Keurig is a machine with a strong instinct for self-preservation.

Tonight it will be even colder - in the 20s - but let's hope without the wind. It's the wind that really makes it extra special. I will break out the big warm blue blanket tonight, and make sure a certain dog is aimed in a different direction.

This chocolate pumpkin loaf is a keeper. The spices are subtle, the pumpkin makes it moist, and there's only 2 tablespoons of fat in the entire loaf. It's not overly sweet yet intensely chocolatey. I'll be making this one fairly often.

The wind is howling here in DC today too. I'm up on the 11th floor on a windy corner of the building and it's just BANGS the screen on the window. It's been going for about 24 hours straight now. We had sun and flurries today too. Always fun.

Off to do "goals"- work assigned, not the personal kind.

  2. ditto here - a wind so cold it cut through winter coats. It also blew the library trashcan lid open because someone wasn't thinking (not me) and put the can out with the hinge of the lid facing south and the open end aimed north. it untied the bags and we all had to spend a good 10 minutes picking up scattered paper before it made it down to the courthouse. hope today is calmer, if not warmer.
