My daughter sent me this picture today:

Miss D is 3 months old.

and I was reminded of this shot of Supergirl at around five months, I think:

So far, I see the same eye color, which appears to be my contribution to their genetic soup. My son has my eyes but my daughter's are different - the only place we thought we saw her eye color was in a picture of her paternal great-grandfather.

It's going to be fun to see how much (if at all) the cousins resemble each other as they grow. I have a cousin a year younger than I am, and when we were growing up people did their best to see a family resemblance. We didn't look alike, she was blonde and I wasn't, her complexion was pinker, her nose was totally different, etc. We looked related in some vague way, but I think it was really more non-physical things like mannerisms and how we talked. My son and daughter don't look much alike at all but if you spent a couple of hours hanging out with them you'd know they were related. I suspect these two will have that sort of family resemblance but won't look much alike in a couple of years, though they both have my shade of blue eyes. I hope they didn't also get grandma's astigmatism.

Two adorable cousins. And you get to play lucky grandmama and hand them backto their folks at the end of the day.

I am off to "rests" as the word verification says.

Ernst and I have dear friends from our canoeing and camping days. They had two daughters, with a reasonable family likeness between them. Each of the daughters married, to men of very different style and appearance.

Debbie produced 3 daughters, and Kate 2.

BUT, the youngest of Debbie's and the elder of Kate's (very close in age) were absolutely interchangeable. Even their mothers and grandmother could be fooled, if only momentarily, if the pair were moving quickly (as if they ever moved any other way!)

Haven't seen the little girls for a few years, so do not know how much this has changed, but at the time it was very striking.

  3. Sweet Bebes! I'm glad you can be close to and see your grandchildren so often.

Gene inheritance is a tricky thing. I think you are right, though, they definitely have your eyes.

I had gray eyes until I was almost eight months old, and DD1 had gray eyes until she was 18 months.

Aren't human eyes and the infinite variation of their color just fascinating?

  4. My daughter's eyes are gray with a hint of gold around the pupil. We had no idea where that came from until we unearthed a picture of her great grandpa, who had the same unusual color. She loved seeing that picture, because the rest of us are shades of blue - that's where she got her striking eye color.

These two have my blue (and my son's blue) already, and we think that'll probably stick. Supergirl is almost 2(already!!) so I think her shade is fixed, and Miss D's eye color hasn't shifted much in the last couple of months. Let's just hope they don't get my astigmatism. Neither of my kids did, so fingers are crossed.
