It's just about the first anniversary of Sophie's Unfortunate Anal Gland Adventure. I was walking behind her this evening, and...yup.
If anyone is looking for me, I'll be on the couch with a glass of wine and Star Trek TNG episodes on Netflix, a small dog, and warm compresses. Cross your fingers that I can head off a repeat of last year's misery.
Oh, poor Sophie - it is such a painful and undignified condition. I hope the compresses work.

It's JUST getting started - one gland is a little bulgy and hard, but not huge and angry red yet. I'll try the compresses again tonight, but I'm going to call the vet in the morning and see if they can get her in for a quick squeeze and look-over. After last year's horrors, I'm not going to mess around.
ReplyDeleteOh poor baby. Yes. this calls for wine. and an early visit to the vets. Wishing you speedy recovery.
ReplyDeletePoor Girl. (You too!) I have to take my pup in quarterly to get her glands expressed. Eww. Hope she doesn't repeat last year. You're a very good Doggie-Mommy.
ReplyDeleteuh-oh. so very sorry to hear this. at least you caught it early this time around so I hope it will not as ugly as last year...Sophie and Murphy are lucky to have such a good momma.
ReplyDeleteIn my experience - if it already looks bad it is to late for expressing cuz it is impacted. I have two Bostons and my nine year old has had the blown anal gland twice. I have never had that issue in any dog I have ever had. However 2 years ago as I was leaving the vet I said to the tech "how am I going to prevent this from happening again?" She told me that when it happend to her dog she had been told to add chopped up green beans to the dog food each day - I was desperate and willing to try anything. Once a day about 2 or 3 tablespoons of chopped green beans and my dog never had that happen again. Also I took her every so often to get the glands expressed until normal and not thick. And then I even tapered that off as it looked good every time. Maybe it will work for you. I never stopped the green beans. Good luck - that is not fun
