I've lived in the South all of my adult life and I'm used to being
ma'am-ed. Especially in my role of "She's from Corporate" in the construction business, many of the field guys I deal with ma'am me within an inch of my life, like I'm some big shot or something. (I'm SO not.) It really didn't occur to me to be offended by it and it doesn't make me feel old.
I grew up in the South, and it is just what you say! It is a sign of respect. On that note, however, it does always remind me I am no longer a kid.
ReplyDeleteHi saw your blog I'm 15 and just moved to the south. I thought you could help. Do adults expect to hear yes or yes maam when being answered? I hear it alot more. Is there any time where you Really Expect it? Do i Just say it when answering a question, if i do? Sorry to bug you , thought you could help.

You can never go wrong with being "too polite." Women who get hung up on being "ma'am-ed" need to get over themselves, I think - especially coming from a teenager, it's very nice and appropriate.
