Left Behind I read this entry this morning and felt strangely comforted that someone else shared my outrage and expressed it so clearly. What the hell is happening to this country? Can someone please tell me? For four years now we've been listening to the endless boogeyman stories about "terruhrists" and of course, "911!!! 911!!!" And we've sat here while Congress distracted us with shit like the Patriot Act and tried to convince us that snooping into our library books is for our own good.
Here's the thing - even I, cynic that I am, thought that all this yammering about Homeland Security meant something - that while the Patriot Act stuff was a load of crap, that behind the nonsense these people were at least toughening up our emergency preparedness and ability to respond when a large number of our citizens were in peril.
I've lived in California and Florida, and I've always said that I'll take hurricanes over earthquakes any day, because you can see a hurricane coming and be prepared. It is also true that hurricane preparedness means having three or four days of food and water on hand, in case you have to wait for assistance.
In this case, we KNEW this storm was going to wallop the Gulf coast. We KNEW this days in advance. This New Orleans scenario had been forecast by experts for YEARS. It is not a shocking and unexpected event. Five days after the rain stops and we have babies dying of dehydration in the filthy streets, because we still haven't gotten any aid to them - yet it can't be because they are inaccessible, because freaking CNN et al. is there filming the insanity. It's because, despite all the hype and chest beating about Homeland Security, our government wasn't ready to mobilize quickly to respond to a long-foretold and foreseen natural disaster. These are the same people who have been scaring the shit out of us for years with their boogeyman nightmares of chemical attacks or nuclear weapons. The boogeyman showed up in the form of a hurricane, and they were caught flat-footed and not at all ready to take charge. And babies are dying in their helpless mothers' arms.
Bush didn't even interrupt his vacation untl the rumblings of "Where is our leader?" hit the NYT editorial page, among other places.
Of course, this is the same crowd that told us the Iraqis would greet us as liberators....
I'm just so sick and disgusted. The urge to just drop everything and head on up there to do something is almost overwhelming. I'm trying to keep in mind that this disaster is going to go on for a long, long time, and the same band of incompetents who can't get water and MREs into town will have no idea what to do with a million homeless people this winter.
Those of us who really aren't in a position to give in to the instinct to just get in the car with a load of bottled water and diapers and jars of peanut butter need to send money now, and then start thinking long term. How will these people be housed, clothed and fed? After the initial horror of this story fades and the camera crews go home, we can't let ourselves slip into complacency and assume the government will take care of them. We need to look for ways to help these people for the next couple of years, at least, because it's quite obvious now that we have no real security in this "Homeland."
Couldn't have said it better. Shocked and disgusted on many levels, esp. when you look at the untold instances where this exact event and outcome has been foretold for years. And now Bush and Co. is refusing help from the Canadians while Condie is on holiday in NYC taking in Broadway shows. Could it be that they are giving the nation the middle finger?
ReplyDeleteYou took the words out of my mouth. I really want to caravan down and get people out using our cars; we can get up to 13 people in just our 2- imagine if we could get just 50 more people to help...but, I know they would never let us in.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think the governments response would have been had this happened along the wealthy areas of the east coast? I think the response would've been quicker and much further reaching; I am sick to my stomach over this.
The Shrub's rating are at an all time low and that is why he is going to NO. But he has yet to visit an natural disaster area. And how much jet fuel will be wasted by him flying over the area?
ReplyDeleteHe wants nothing to interrupt his naps, oh, sorry, vacations. His domestic agenda is non-existant. I work with the military supply chain and that sucks because even there nothing is pre-planned. And as a first responder, I know first hand about how ill-prepared the nation is for this sort of stuff. (And as a note of interest, if Camp David was to have a fire, there is only one engine up there and the local fire companies can not go onto the site! We are not allowed to respond to anything at Camp Daivd and yet we train the people stationed at Camp David. We will just sit right outside and watch it burn.)
Outraged is the word. I just cannot believe this is happening in our country. I don't understand why 5 days after the hurricane there are still people needing water and food - we got to the tsunami area quicker! I hope heads roll at FEMA which is a national disgrace! I am also fighting the urge to load up the car trunk with bottles of water and head to New Orleans. I am heartsick, sad, and disgusted right now to be an American. How can we treat our own people so badly?

Thanks for a great post - oh how I wish this shit did not happen & thus we would not have cause to write about it & to feel the outrage. Bring back Clinton!
ReplyDeleteThe poorest of people & the people of color are the ones who get hit the hardest & it happens just about every time.
OK, so Trent Lott's home was demolished. I am sorry. He has the $$s to rebuild - most folks do not.
Thanks, C.

Well said, Catherine! What I don't get is why is this cretin STILL our president?? Why haven't more people become outraged enough to impeach this elitist buffoon?
ReplyDeleteIt makes me sad and ashamed.
Catherine -- I adore your blog. You say what I think, only much more eloquently than I ever could. Reading your comments on Catholicism, politics, knitting, etc. helps prevent from running in the streets tearing my hair out!

AMEN SISTER! Bush is a DOLT...now if only we could impeach on the grounds of SHEER AND UTTER STUPIDITY!
ReplyDeleteBookmarked your blog...I like to read people who aren't afraid to tell it like it is!

You said it! Personally, while neither really thrills me, I'll take our earthquakes since they happen less frequently and we don't have a whole season dedicated to 'em. Howevah, whether it's rocking and rolling land or wild and woolly weather, WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO BETTER THAN THIS. The man is a shame and embarrassment to us, and our (national, official) response to these poor folks has been so woefully inadequate. At work we've heard some real horror stories from some plan participants in LA, and it gives me goosebumps. I too wish I could just hop in the car and drive down with supplies.
ReplyDeleteI heard The Moron in Chief on NPR on the way home saying, "The people of New Orleans need to understand there's a lot of people working really hard!" I'm sure the people of New Orleans are now smacking their foreheads and saying, "Ohhh! OK! No worries then. Thanks George!"
Karen, you're in Eustis? Cool!
ReplyDeleteBTW, I apologize for the inconvenience of comment verification, but as I'm posting about news stories it tends to attract a different element than posting about knitting, and I figure that increases the odds of a comment spamming. I've also removed the Tagboard - it never worked very well and so far, at least, Blogger's comments seem to work okay.
