Let the Lying Begin

WASHINGTON (CNN) Defending the U.S. government's response to Hurricane Katrina, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff argued Saturday that government planners did not predict such a disaster ever could occur.

But in fact, government officials, scientists and journalists have warned of such a scenario for years.

Chertoff: Katrina scenario did not exist

These people are unfuckingbelievable. Clearly, the strategy now is "Lie your asses off, deny the mountains of evidence to the contrary, blame the locals, blame the victims, repeat the lies over and over until people are so worn down and sick of the subject, they stop listening and some even come to believe it."

It worked for Iraq, didn't it?

Chertoff also argued that authorities did not have much notice that the storm would be so powerful and could make a direct hit on New Orleans.

"It wasn't until comparatively late, shortly before -- a day, maybe a day and a half, before landfall -- that it became clear that this was going to be a Category 4 or 5 hurricane headed for the New Orleans area."

As far back as Friday, August 26, the National Hurricane Center was predicting the storm could be a Category 4 hurricane at landfall, with New Orleans directly in its path. Still, storms do change paths, so the possibility existed that it might not hit the city.

But the National Weather Service prediction proved almost perfect.

Katrina made landfall on Monday, August 29.

Oh, and that tool in charge of FEMA is blithely lying about the predictions too, saying that nobody had any idea the storm could be that big. Everybody with a television knew it, but the head of our disaster relief agency pleads ignorance.

Dear Jesus. We've got to get these people the fuck out of our government.

A damning and revealing article o the WP, too.

  1. Have you read ABB's column under "Homeland Security, My Black Ass"? The comments from "Bex", "dondon009", "Absolut Billy" and "Disgusted in St. Louis" were particularly interesting.

  2. ABB is absolutely right about the disaster kit, too. We're only halfway through hurricane season, and obviously there ain't no security in the old Homeland. I always keep some supplies on hand, but I'm reinforcing them bigtime.

  3. Shock and Awe obviously doesn't begin at home. (

(Poor Laura...but then, she married him....)

You covered the issues very eloquently, thank you. I'm not sure gross incompetence is an impeachable offense, but dereliction of duty is. Makes one long for the days of The Buck Stops Here, doesn't it? Now it's about blaming the lowest players in the fiasco, and protecting those who had the power to override anything.

  10. I don't apologize, i just warn. I work in construction world, and I learned 20 years ago that I needed to say the cuss words first, so the good old boys wouldn't strangle and become inarticulate talking to me. I got sick of all the "Sorry ma'am!"

Hope this link works. It's Maureen Dowd's latest editorial. No new information (at least not to those of us who have been paralyzed in front of the TV), but I think I might print it out and stick it in my pocket for future reference in case I ever run into someone who still wants to defend W.

Oh, and the thing that is just making my stomach turn is the way Bush acted on his first visit. Making jokes about having "too much fun" in NOLA in his early years? This is our President?

So many other things that can go into the WTF column, but I feel queasy just thinking about them. . .
