My daughter called an hour ago to say that one of the boys at the house in which she's temporarily camped (shhh, don't tell her grandma she's sharing a house with boys) had found a baby squirrel outside - they heard it crying, it must have fallen from/wandered away from its nest. So of course my daughter called Mommy to ask how to raise an orphaned squirrel, because "My Mommy knows everything." It's so sweet that my 20 year old daughter still thinks that...funny thing is, I have raised orphaned animals, because we once had a cat who tried to adopt various wild infants, would carry them home unharmed and release them in my house. The cutest was a tiny baby rabbit, which I successfully raised and released. I gave her some general advice about warmth, hydration, and puppy formula with an eyedropper, then Googled "orphaned squirrel" and found this excellent site: Squirrel Tales, which recommended warmth, hydration and puppy formula with an eyedropper. Go me. The baby appears to be about six weeks old, which is good news, it's probably old enough to survive if they care for it properly, and that site gives very concise advice on feeding and care. It has already bonded with one of the boys and wants to be held constantly, so I'm thinking there's a new rodent in that household - though that site insists squirrels should never be tamed, I've known a few that tamed themselves in exchange for a lifestyle of riding human shoulders and mooching treats. Though they are "challenging" pets, meaning they're destructive little buggers, I suspect this one has already decided that these humans are okay.
