The Holidays Are Over

and the slog through the normal workweek has resumed. I'm trying to be more tolerant of my job, not let the small stupid things get to me, but it's hard - like when the copier has been out of staples for a week and the people in charge of such things discuss ordering staples, yet no staples appear, so I am stuck hand-stapling our enormous volume of outgoing pleadings, which I really shouldn't be doing at all but we still have no word on EVER getting a secretary. Yet I love the short commute, the Boss and the clients, and a threat to quit if things don't improve would be a hollow one. And I think they know it.

So I will adjust and make life as civilized as possible in the cube farm. I've been stalking my Pocket DJ via the UPS tracking site, and damn, it has bounced from two stops in Texas to New Orleans to Jacksonville. It has at least entered FL. I'm stalking it because I expect this to be a "sign for" delivery, and if it's not on the late truck that comes through after I'm home from work, it means a trip to UPS on Saturday morning. That's not really a big problem though, since UPS is a brief detour from yoga. It's just aggravating becuase I was off Monday while my package was hanging out in New Orleans for the weekend.

Nothing exciting to show, fiberly speaking - I'm crocheting that blue throw pillow, and I'm in love with Tunisian crochet, I love the neat grid of stitches, it's easy and somewhat hypnotic to do, and yet somehow faster than knitting. I am itching to crochet some flowers for it, but I know if I get sidetracked on making flowers, the pillow itself will not get done. I'm way too easily distracted that way.

I'm knitting the shrug, I love the stitch definition of Lamb's Pride Worsted, I love the subtle shading of this heathery-rose color, but I do not love the way it sheds mohair. I hope it won't be too itchy to wear. If anyone has any tips on taking the itch out of Lamb's Pride, please let me know.

After an early spell of cold weather we are creeping up toward 80 again during the day, 50s at night. I know it will turn cold again, I do not know when. I also know I would probably be better off focusing my knitting time on warmer-weather things already, since our winter ends for good sometime in mid-March.

And on the subject of impending Spring, I'm having some major body angst lately - despite eating right and watching my portions and all that, I'm up like six pounds since Thanksgiving, and even worse, I'm disproportionately more flabby. It's not my imagination, I can see it in the way my clothes fit. My thighs are suddenly bulging where they didn't bulge before, etc. It's like I gained six pounds in weight and added about 15 of goosh and bulges. Not working out has cost me dearly, and it's going to be very hard to fight my way back from this. This getting old shit really sucks sometimes. I don't feel old, and I don't think I look old - I often hear that I don't look my age - but the body doesn't lie, and my body is starting to ACT very middle-aged.

It's time to arrest the downhill slide, which means time to rejoin the gym. I need the cardio and weights and I'm not doing it well at home - just for example, I am sitting here typing this instead of doing a video. I need to adjust my work hours to leave at 4:30 and hit the gym 3x a week, before everybody else gets off work, THEN go home and deal with critters and such. Yep, I'm going to do that this week.

  1. Oh god - you too? I got the weight AND the goosh and I absolutely know it's the lack of hard body exercise. Flex and stretch is important, but pump and grind is essential too.

And the getting older just keeps on getting older! ah well. no use repining, best get to the gym.

  2. At least you can adjust your work hours to get to the gym before everyone else. Even if I get off early, the traffic over to my gym puts me there when everyone else arrives. So U have been thinking about going there about 7 pm. Now if I could just find a good yoga class in this small town.

  3. One of the reasons I tolerate my otherwise rather shitty job is the short commute and the convenience - I not only can get to the gym early, but I get a substantial discount through my employer for the membership. Yes, I could make more money at a firm downtown, but I've made that commute and it reeks. Quality of life issues do matter. Of course, money would be nice....

  4. IF (and that's a big if) you have a teacher who really will take you through the paces in yoga, you will find it much harder work than you thought. I got into yoga a few years ago, and my biggest complaint is the difficulty in finding advanced classes. Most are at beginner or pre-beginner levels, and aren't much of a challenge to the average person IMHO. I don't find them much of a challenge, and I'm not exactly an athlete. After working through exercises like headstand, shoulder stand, peacock feather, and other balances you will definitely know you have muscles. Your morning walks are a good combination with it.

  5. I've done yoga off and on since my teens, I've just never been that into it for some reason, I can't commit to it. The place I'm trying this time sounds appealling, but I already KNOW I like the gym - my husband and I went in the mornings before work for a long time, until he got sick and everything went to hell and took my ass with it. I'll do both, and one will emerge as the thing that is right for me.

  6. Of course. You have to find what works for you or you won't stick with it--which is what's really important. I used to go to the gym, but I just became very bored. Impatient and easily bored, that's me. Which is why it surprises me that I've stuck to yoga more than I have to other programs. Now I have to figure out how to add the cardio component. There's not a lot of places to walk around here, and walking on flat ground never feels like much exercise.

  7. I'm on the flattest of the flat ground, which is why the gym membership makes sense to me. Even if I mostly use the treadmill and elliptical trainer, it's more beneficial than long, hot walks on very flat terrain. But I do enjoy weights and will do that in conjunction with yoga. I have high hopes for this yoga class, I really liked them when I checked them out, and they teach all the way up to instructor level. It's anusara yoga, everybody there is "officially certified" etc. I'm jazzed, it sounds like something I might be able to actually get into.

  8. Cool. I'm glad to hear they teach up to instructor level. You should be able to keep challenging yourself that way. I'm thinking I should try to make it over to the University's fitness centre to use the elliptical trainer/whatever--I just have to figure out how to fit it into my schedule.
