Post Holiday Sales, Diet and Detox

It has been a few days of merriment, gluttony and inebriation around the Bossy Doghouse, but now it's time to cut it out. I got on the scale this morning and gasped - Yes, Virginia, it is possible for a peri-menopausal body to gain five pounds in a few days! Eating out, eating leftovers, eating out again, Bailey's in the coffee, margaritas with the ribs last night, oh my, it has been delightful but now it's time to cut it the hell OUT. Or none of the new clothes will fit. As it is, I am certainly in NO mood to try on new slacks. Oy!

Girlchild and I braved the after-Christmas sales yesterday. I have never, ever seen the malls so crowded. Apparently everyone thought the way we did - the hell with having lots of gifts wrapped under the tree, we'll do a few "gifts" and shop for useful things after the sales. And boy, did we score! Girlchild scored the most, simply because she had the least. Boots and a lovely pair of black pumps at Aerosoles, half price. (I may have to go back and grab a pair of those pumps for myself, they are too cute.) Pants and sweaters at Express and The Limited. Mom scored THREE sweaters at Ann Taylor, one a soft pink cashmere that is perfect for my cocoa-brown microsuede skirt. J. Jill produced a chenille cable cardigan for $59 - shoot, the yarn would cost more than that - and a pink t to match. My Friday denim will look so much better. I also bought more foundation and a collagen lip-plumping product called City Lips at Sephora. I'll let you know if I get plumper lips. I also found a cute little brown faux-reptile bag for $14 - can't go wrong at that price. We are both major devotees of What Not to Wear, and really have taken a lot of Stacy and Clinton's advice to heart - it has definitely improved our wardrobes. I definitely have noted that when I dress like a lady instead of a construction worker (as I was yesterday - too fat and cold to care about dressing up!) I am treated much better by everyone.

It was a very productive shopping day, which made the crowds and insanity worth it. In many cases we scored the LAST item in our sizes, which means if we had been "sensible" and waited until today, when many people will be back at work, we'd have lost out. So the madness - and it WAS utter madness - was worth it. Today we hit the third mall. There will be no fattening dinner out. It's time for restraint again.

We ate at the Chili's near the house - ribs and margaritas - hence my feeling of bloat and wretched excess this morning. It's Monday, it's time to put the Christmas eating behind me and clean up my act. Tomorrow I must go back to work.

Knitting - believe it or not, lots of knitting is happening around here. The long-neglected pair of socks is on the home stretch, I'm halfway down the foot of sock two. I am back to sock-crazy, I have lots of sock yarn and now I can't wait to keep cranking out more socks, but before I cast on another pair fingerless gloves must jump to the top of the agenda. It is 34 degrees out there. The weather has been unseasonably cold for us, for this early in the season. Girlchild has been dealing with 20s up in Tallahassee. Normally we don't get really cold until sometime late in January, but we've had a couple of cold snaps/borderline serious freezes already this season.

I gave in to impulse and cast on the shrug from the new FCEK, in rose Lamb's Pride worsted. It may be a gift for L, who is having a hard time following the recent death of her father. I was toying with a prayer shawl, but that would require breaking my yarn fast, because the giant stash has nothing appropriate. I'm thinking the shrug/shawl is a prayer shawl when made with prayers and intentions, and probably will be worn a lot more. She's blonde, the rose wool will be flattering and warm.

On a totally different subject, I am not happy with the current look of the blog. I think it needs another remodeling - I prefer a crisper, more colorful graphic look. This time, now that I know Blogger's little tricks, I will save my sidebar links before messing with the template, so I can just paste them back in and not break any rings. That's why I have held off adding links, etc. - because I am still toying with the idea of a new look entirely. (Well, that's one reason, the other is sheer laziness.)

Much is happening in the world, I've been reading infuriating political books, keeping up with current events, and it's not that I've lost interest in ranting about C+ Augustus (as Eric Alterman calls our little dictator), I still care very much about those things, but it'll keep until the blog gets remodeled. Everything in its place, and all that jazz.

And now it's time for another cup of coffee and continued progress on the second sock. And some homemade organic yogurt for breakfast. Murphy may not be the cutest little thing in this house anymore - I'm in love with the yogurt maker!
