A few days ago, when I posted something about being plant-based but not vegan, Gae mentioned a hardcore vegan friend with heart disease. When I read this post linked to Facebook, I thought of that guy!
More later - I'm off to the zoo to feed the giraffes.
A very interesting link, thank you Catherine. And it does sum up a lot of the problem with 'vegan', so much of it is based on an an emotional form of ethical fanaticism, and has little to do with healthy eating.
ReplyDeleteLast we heard, our fanatical friend, the Virtuous Vegan, is doing well, but still not allowed back on his pushbike. My old man, on the other hand, is still treading along, at at just short of 80, is about 15 years older than the VV.

I'm getting closer to vegan all the time. Health, and what they do to animals. And I feel better. When I was vegetarian before, It was "eat french fries at McDonald's" time. This time, I'm doing better.

I eat meat, but I'm not going to argue that all the hormones, antibiotics, and steroids that they feed the animals that are raised for commercial slaughter are good for you. I know a few farmers, and I think it says allot that most of them keep the animals they raise to eat themselves separate from the others and don't give them all those chemicals. (They know what is in the meat from the grocery store, and won't eat it.) I also know people that keep hobby flocks of fiber-bearing animals, and those sheep, rabbits, etc. have names and are kept as pets until they die of natural causes. Our summers are so hot and humid that it is actually cruel to not shear them---they love to get naked in the spring. This reminds me of "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" by Barbara Kingsolver---exactly what are you eating and where did it come from?
ReplyDeleteHi - Did you know "you" are emailing people?
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of not knowing what's in it - does anybody know anything about tilapia? I know it's a bottom feeder, and they are raised in tanks - but what else?
k
I have been getting some email from "you" over the last week or two as well.
ReplyDeleteHmm. Thanks for letting me know!
