Dinner with a good friend, a former coworker from back when the housing industry was thriving (before the boom and bust). We are in similar places now; we are both making less money and not sure what the future holds, and we commiserated about the place we are at this stage of life - little security and figuring it out day by day. But I was struck by how often she repeated the phrase "at my age." She doesn't know what she'd do, when she has to go looking for a job at her age. This and that was so hard, at her age. I'm five years older than she is, and either I'm living in a delusion (which is entirely possible) or perception really is everything in life. I just don't think about it that much. Denial has worked so far, and I'm going with it.
New glasses. I'm wearing them now. I like the look. My former glasses were very thin, semi-rimless, "Don't notice me, I'm not really here." I was still wearing RGP lenses full time when I bought them, but as every contact lens wearer knows, you still need those back-up glasses, so I found a pair of $70 frames I liked well enough, because my lenses are expensive enough. They weren't a fashion statement, but they were fine. They became my full-time glasses during the last year, when I realized that I was wearing off-the-rack readers over my contacts to do just about anything except driving, and I couldn't even read the dashboard while driving. So I abandoned the contacts and went to full time glasses. I liked the frames and still do, but when I picked out my new glasses I had an urge to make a statement. If I have to wear glasses, I'm going to WEAR GLASSES!
Please ignore the "rushed out the door without styling product and this is what you get at the end of the day" hair and exceedingly minimal makeup, and general end of the day deterioration. I like the glasses, and the new prescription is OMG! I really needed these.
I do have to get them adjusted, because the right earpiece is at this very moment digging in painfully behind my ear, but otherwise, they are fun, they are bold, they demand to be noticed. If I have to wear glasses all the time now, dammit, I will wear the hell out of glasses!
The whole package looks just fine to me, and the glasses are a good look.
ReplyDeleteI have normal multi-focals, a special focal length pair for the computer, and a pair with my prescription x 3 for close handiwork, not to forget the multi-focal sunglasses. Just like my mother, you can tell where I am from which pair of specs is left sitting on the kitchen bench. But at least we both escaped from the Audiology test yesterday with out hearing aids each!
