It's not cold again. It has been fixed THREE times, and the one year warranty that came with the condo (to which I added appliance coverage out of my own pocket) has expired. Getting it "fixed" again is truly throwing good money after bad, so I have to just DO it. I had hoped to hold off until spring and do all of the appliances at once, but I cannot wait any longer. Frozen things are soft, and the ice cubes are an iceberg, and nothing in the fridge compartment is much colder than picnic cooler with half melted ice. I hate to spend the money, but a new fridge will cost about as much as a trip to the ER if I give myself food poisoning, and about what I'll spend throwing out food before its time over the next few months. I need to bust out the steel tape measure and confirm the measurements of the existing space, but it looks like this one is the winner:
Come to Mama, Baby!
It's not a French Door Behemoth, but then, this IS just a two bedroom condo. :-) It is sleek and gorgeous, has tons more useful storage space, and most importantly, will keep my food cold. It is the first piece of the new kitchen. They are offering $100 off, free delivery, etc., and if I still have an active account with them (I am not sure, but I think I do) I can get 6 months no interest on their credit card. It looks like a winner.
I am not talking about the election tonight. I am not even watching the returns. I slept 4 hours last night. I don't think people realize how much is riding on this for people like me, with a pre-existing condition that disqualifies me from health insurance - Obamacare fixed that for me. I can get real insurance, and Mitt Romney has vowed to take that opportunity away from me. That is just ONE of the many, many, many issues that matter, but for me, you better believe that one is fucking personal. This election will determine whether I can have decent health care, and can dare to get sick without going bankrupt for the next 11 years (and that's assuming Romney won't also fuck up Medicare with a voucher plan like his creepy veep wants).
I know the odds are heavily favoring Obama, but I'm here in FL, the state that screwed up the 2000 election - we are all jittery here.
Irony - I won't watch the election coverage because I don't need the stress, but a big part of my future actually IS riding on the outcome. So I'll watch Netflix tonight, and maybe dare to peek at Twitter now and then. I asked my daughter to text me if we hit 270 electoral votes before she goes to bed - otherwise, I am avoiding reality as long as I can.
Keeping all fingers and toes crossed for you and Obamacare.
ReplyDeleteWe have universal health care (Medicare) which is funded by a levy on all incomes over a certain level.
We personally have private health care - in case one of us needs new hips or knees. It COULD be done in a public hospital on Medicare, if you are prepared for a long wait.
Our private cover costs a jot under 3000 p.a., NOT the highest level.
But for visits to the local GP, because we are both pensioners (partly self funded) our Medicare card covers the visits. Of Ernst's three specialists, two charge upfront (and I claim on the private fund for about 60% refund), the third 'bulk bills' through Medicare, and also gets a small extra payment, automatically, from the private fund. And NO ONE has ever asked if my asthma is pre-existing, which it darned well is.....very early childhood.
Enjoy the new fridge, mine is 20 years old, never any trouble, but the new models are very sleek and sexy. My fridge and freezer pigeon pair were made in New Zealand.
Best of luck,

Sweet dreams, yes you can! :D
ReplyDelete@Gae - I would LOVE to be able to buy into Medicare, it would be the most efficient solution, and maybe, just maybe we'll go in that direction next. Alan Grayson was sent back to Congress last night (he had been defeated in 2010) and he was the strongest, most outspoken proponent of Medicare for all. Until that happens, I'm happy to be able to get "uninsurable" coverage through Obamacare. Funny how the right called it Obamacare to mock and demonize it, and we adopted it and use the term with pride.
ReplyDeleteIf you haven't got the new fridge yet, you might wait until the week after Thanksgiving. That seems to be the time for bigger savings. Bought my front-loader washer set then and saved $500 on the set.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait; my food is melting and spoiling. But today the very nice young man at Home Depot told me that the fridge I want goes on sale tomorrow!! I will be there bright and early to make it so. Let's hope they have one in stock and can deliver by the weekend.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I forgot to mention that the Medicare levy only kicks in over a certain annual income level. We are exempt as pensioners, but still benefit. Well, we paid the levy for a huge chunk of our working lives.
ReplyDeleteMedicare came in in Australia in the early 70's. It is our choice to have extra private cover.
Best of luck with the fridge.
