So, on Sunday my son was determined to take his daughter to Rock Springs. It's one of his favorite places, and a kid-friendly swimming hole. So we got an early start and got there before the crowd, which eventually got so large they closed the park. Supergirl LOVED it - from the scents of the many picnicking families' grills to the walk to the wading area/lagoon, she was IN.
It did take a while and a bit of patience to get her to wade in with her trusty duck, and Daddy and Namaw right there beside her.
Pretty soon the duck was hanging off the back of my chair and she was wading on her own.
And practicing swimming....
And yes, she does put her face in the water without fear.
We waded/swam until it got so insanely crowded and tummies were rumbling, when we called it a day and went back to my place for lunch and her nap. I promised her that next time we visit, when she's swimming for reals, we'll do the tube run. You "launch" from the bubbling water at the top and float down the river, and it's shallow and kid-friendly, and very easy for a moderately safe basic swimmer. With grownups around her I'm sure she'd ace it next year.
We did have to ease her out of the water (she didn't want to leave!!!) with a stop at the great playground, where she explored and dismissed several things as too big kid for her. She is so self-aware. She's not afraid to wade in chin deep water without holding hands, but that slide? No, too tall, that's for a big kid. She did go down the side-by-side slide with her father a few times.
Oh, I forgot to mention the visit to the new local craft brewery on Saturday! Yes, we took a two year old to a new local craft brewery. Her father and I sampled a flight (small glasses of the choices on tap) each while Supergirl watched Wonder Pets on her daddy's phone and ate an apple I'd packed for her. She bothered nobody and sat on her stool, eating her apple and watching Wonder Pets. Occasionally she commented on the show, quietly, to us. She is an old pro at visiting breweries, this is her father's business.
Taking kids to a tasting room apparently is a new concept in the area, because we received a few startled looks and one serious attack of stinkeye from a woman who looked like she spent a lot of time around bars (slaps self for being bitchy, but yeah, she did). A tasting room at a brewery isn't a BAR. It's not where people go to hang out, get drunk or hook up or do other trashy "bar" things, and the staff didn't blink an eye at a 2 year old visitor tagging along. It's a business where beer is made, like a bakery is where bread is made. The locals will catch up to this concept eventually, I hope.
Anyway, the beer was quite nice. I actually loved their dark beers, and I'm not normally a fan - the typical stout tends to have too much undertone of burnt coffee bitterness for me. But the Pendulum and Merket Mocha were lovely and smooth and didn't have that "bottom of the office coffee pot" aftertaste thing I usually notice. I don't have my son's professional palate, but I thought they were tasty, rich and delicious, and he liked them too. We met the owner and my son chatted with him about the brewery setup. They have been wildly successful since day one and are now scrambling to meet demand, and I wish them all the best.
On Monday I had to scramble to get across town to the airport for a closing. Not actually AT the airport, but maybe one block off airport property. We had to wait, and wait, and wait, for the lender to approve the signed documents, and finally got out of there a little after noon - my buyer took his keys and headed off to plot his move out of an apartment into a nice big townhouse where he'll be able to walk to stores and restaurants and bike to work in not so hot weather.
I scooted back to my office to turn in my paperwork and then meet up with my departing family for lunch. Daughter-in-law and her mom drove up from South Florida, they loaded the car, I met them at our favorite Chinese restaurant, and we did a late lunch/goodbye. Supergirl gave me a huge pang when we explained that she was going home, and she said she wanted to go back to my house to play with Murphy and Sophie. Arrrgh! I promised we'd visit her new house soon, and she'd come back soon, and we hugged goodbyes. I sent her off with a job to do - she has to hug everybody in her family in Asheville for me, and tell them I sent that hug from Florida. Her daddy will help her keep track. She's on it. God, she's a fabulous kid.
In Wisconsin it is legal to serve a two-year-old, if the parents approve.
ReplyDeleteIt all sounds so wonderful.
