Although Isaac is heading for the Gulf of Mexico, and then possibly the Florida Panhandle as a Category 2 or maybe 3 (EEK!), the storm is so large that Central Florida will be affected too. Clouds are gathering already - the sky is still mostly blue and sunny, but some impressively towering cloud formations are visible to the southeast. It's hard to imagine the size of these storms when you see the path plotted on the weather reports. That little line showing the storm going across South Florida and then out into the Gulf is the center. The storm itself will affect most of the state.
We'll get the outer bands, and are expecting thunderstorms, possibly tornadoes, winds of around 25 mph and a ton of rain, starting later today through Tuesday. No word on whether schools will be closed yet, so my daughter's waiting to see if she'll have the day off. Her husband will almost certainly be called in to work on his days off, at the residential school storms are an "all hands" situation, and if her school isn't closed and he's called in, I'll likely be called upon to do emergency Miss D Duty.
I'm planning my activities for these stormy days - I have a farm mailing to get out, and I can print labels now and prepare it with or without power. I have a lot of reading to do, and planning my business activities for September. But I'll also make some time for knitting and catching up on recorded TV if the electricity doesn't desert us, and of course stand by in case the Emergency Backup Grandma alarm goes off.
My desk faces the window, and as I'm sitting here the clear blue sky is getting covered by a thickening layer of cloud cover. I think today's predicted rainy afternoon might commence a tad before noon.
