Many years ago I used to blog about politics fairly often, and wasted too many hours arguing with people online, debating the stoopid until I thought my head might explode, and then my head actually did explode and after I recovered from that adventure, I decided ranting and arguing with idiots wasn't a good use of my time. This doesn't mean I stopped caring or staying informed or stopped getting mad - I just stopped wasting my time randomly ranting into the ether and/or trying to share facts with the willfully clueless. I didn't give up caring or thinking or educating myself on the issues.
For the first time in my 54 years I'm actually getting involved in grassroots action. I've signed on to volunteer with Obama for America, doing nerdy things like data entry and making phone calls. I haven't even had to show up and do anything yet (though I think I'm available to work a phone bank for a couple of hours this week) and they called me yesterday to ask if I'd like to go hear the First Lady speak on Tuesday - she'll be in town to talk to grassroots supporters.
"Really? Wow, that's terrific, yes, I would love to be there!" (11 year old inside me shrieks "I'm gonna see and maybe meet the First Lady, OMG-OMG-OMG SQUEEEEEEE!!!!")
So, to make a sweaty afternoon at OFA's Sanford HQ short, my daughter and I each have tickets for Tuesday and will be there when the FLOTUS speaks at UCF. We will of course be totally grownup and well-groomed and dignified, but...SQUEEEEE!!!!
This concludes the brief detour into the Political, until I report on the event.
