A Series of Expensively Unfortunate Events.

No, nothing to do with the dog's teeth. He's recovering, and the bank account will too. Eventually. This is about what people do to houses. I've seen a lot of houses in the last week, and they left me Sad. The things people do to innocent houses blows my MIND, and not just at the bottom of the price point. At the entry level end you just expect to see that earnest people who didn't know what they were doing did a WTF here or there, and God Bless Them, it might be unfortunate but it won't always take a fortune to undo. It's in the middle that the really weird shit happens. It wasn't cheap to close in the screened porch, but why on EARTH did you do it the way you did? And flooring. Oh God People, I could rant for an hour just about FLOORING.

Just remember this: Paint is cheap. Flooring is NOT. Go wild on your walls, furniture and window coverings, enjoy! A buyer may hate your taste in paint, furnishings and window treatments, but I can at least try to talk them down from that - it's not permanent and let's look past that to the bones - flooring, fixtures, cabinets, etc. But if you've redone all the floors in a mishmash of laminate in different colors in every room, that's an expensive WTF. Go neutral. And if you want to move walls, do consult a professional to be sure they all line up right at the end. And redesigning the kitchen? Yeah. That's not a good place to solo on your first venture into renovations. The road to home improvement hell is paved with big ideas poorly executed.

Murphy is doing well, and I've somehow signed up to do two days of Miss D next week, Monday and Friday. I have SO much shit to do around her days it ain't funny. I think I'll start with laundry.

We might just run up against FLOORING when we sell this place, not because it is awful, but just because a lot of people think carpet is essential.
This is a beach side suburb, we have dogs, and I HATE carpet. The wet areas have ceramic tiles, and the rest of the house, all through has sheet vinyl flooring of excellent quality, in a neutral / grey slate pattern.
One of my other pet hates is CURTAINS, so I have Venetian blinds everywhere.
But in real and virtual house-hunting I have seen some really wild WTF's.

Good luck with Miss D, and lots of evergy, you'll need it!

  2. As long as the flooring is neutral and fairly consistent throughout the living areas, somebody will appreciate the lack of carpet! I know I would. In the situation I ranted about, a small house had easily five different colors of flooring in a small contiguous area - tile at the front door became one type of laminate in the living room, the connected dining area had another color entirely, the small enclosed porch had a third, the master bedroom had a fourth, I think the other bedrooms had something else, and then the kitchen was tiled, but of course not the same tile as the foyer. It was jarring, and so unnecessary, because I know all the work was done at the same time! If they'd picked a color or type of flooring and stuck with it throughout, it would have been much better.
