The Universe Has a Wicked Sense of Humor.

And yes, it's been a week since I've blogged. Again.

So, when we last left Catherine's New Career Adventure, I was driving up a very narrow dirt road on the side of a mountain in East BFE, hoping I could turn around somewhere up there and not have to back down, because it was scary as shit. I asked the Universe for clients who want to live in houses on paved roads, please!

And the Universe snickered softly and handed me this week when, to make a long story short, I found myself driving Baby the Brave Little Subaru around a property that the listing agent said was navigable. We took Baby because yup, Subarus can do anything, and the listing agent knew it was raw land but thought it had at least been mowed fairly recently. She was very nice and VERY apologetic when we discovered that the land hadn't been mowed, oh, I'm thinking since early spring, if then. The grass was up to Baby's windows and I was just praying there were no hidden holes or abandoned sharp farm implements in our path.

We startled a couple of nesting birds (which made me cringe, thinking of babies in nests) and about eleventy-squillion grasshoppers and other bugs. At one point, the listing agent and my customer had to hop out of the car and HOLD UP A FENCE so I could drive under it. Okay, it wasn't a fence in the suburban sense of the word, just some floppy and non-hot cattle fencing, but it was hilarious, as they stood on their toes and held it up over Baby's roof rack, and I drove between them. As I did it I was struck by the fact that I've gone from sorting out issues with international development projects to driving under a saggy spot in a cattle fence in one short year. It's a riot, but also weird, yanno?

We all got through the property tour just fine, though I did have to pick plant life out of Baby's bumper later. She didn't even get scratched (worse than she was already), and she navigated the adventure with ease, including showing off her turning radius as we left the dirt and made a hard left as we popped back onto pavement, to the oohs and aahs of my passengers. The land is gorgeous, the views amazing, and it was quite an adventure.

I would like to say that this off-road adventure led to a sale, but the jury is still out on that. And that ready, willing and able buyer looking for something typical, like a 3/2 with a garage on a paved street in a good school system is still out there, but we haven't found each other.

Subject Change:

So, Babydaddy and Babymama and Supergirl are off to FL this weekend for a cousin's wedding (cousin of Babymama). My FDiL wanted to get her nails done for the event, and I was able to scramble through my day in time to get to their place at 3:30. Supergirl was still napping when I arrived.

She didn't wake up until 4, so I had time to check email and make a couple of calls, and when I heard her stirring I went in to get her. She sat up, blinked at me with those big, owlish blue eyes, and then said, "Hi Namaw!" and looked so happy to see me, I melted all over again. We spent a very pleasant couple of hours watching Barney and Dora, reading books, and (on my end) returning a couple of phone calls.

Her mama says she mentions "Murphy and Sophie" all the time. Her mom, Primary Sitting Grandma, watched her over the weekend and asked later who she was talking about. She thought it was the dogs' names, but wasn't sure. Apparently her Dinner with Murphy and Sophie made a big impression and she is still talking about it. I promised that we will set up another play date for an evening next week, and I'll have a fully charged camera battery ready.

Girlmama is doing great, 2nd granddaughter is ripening, and I'm calculating how I can be in two places at once in October. I'm probably going to finish up Supergirl's Granny Afghan this weekend, and then I am shifting gears to a sweater and hat for the new kid, who needs her own nickname. Wondergirl? I think I thought of something months ago and then promptly forgot it.

Once again, summer is winding down to a world of crazy at the Bossy Doghouse.

Having been up Milpitas Wash in a 28 foot RV(out by Wiley's Well in the Sonora Desert) you had me on the edge of my seat with your tale of the drive through cattle country. Happy you got out, and were with people who could hold a fence apart for you. Whew!

Happy Knitting and Kidlet Caring to you. Sweet stories of SuperGirl!

  2. Please be careful driving through tall grass - especially when it's dry. We - at my gov't agency - have had a couple suv incidents was driving around hilly, unpaved terrain and the vehicle was stopped in the grass. Something under the vehicle (the catalytic converter maybe?) got hot and caught fire causing a total loss of the vehicle. We're now told to not stop over unmown grass and to check under our vehicles when back on pavement to make sure we're not dragging brush. I'd feel bad if I didn't share this and something happened, ya know?

  3. Amy - good point, but in this case we'd just had a shower pass by, so everything was moist enough to clump down nicely under the wheels. But I'll definitely keep that in mind for future off-road adventures in hilly, unpaved terrain. Because it would REALLY suck to lose Baby.
