Cold, colder, coldest.

It's Arctic cold here. Tuesday tied the record for coldest daytime temperature, which was set in 1959. It's going to warm up quite a bit today through Sunday, then Sunday night another wave will come through and quite possibly turn our rainy Sunday into a snowy Sunday night, no doubt with added bonus icy roads on Monday morning. I'm actually glad I'm not rushing off to a new job yet. The dogs are dealing with it well, but have taken over the living room and down throws.

On the subject of my employment future, I had an epiphany this week. My son, who is a wise man beyond his years in many ways, repeated something to me that he'd said to one of his friends a while back, on the subject of the job market here. "It's best if you bring your own job." So I started thinking about job skills I brought with me, and places to use them.

I believe I've stated in many usually profane ways that I'm not really looking to be a paralegal again. In fact, just typing the word feels like failure somehow - I mean, I know I could be content in a good paralegal job, but I also know they are hard to find even in the big city, and this ain't the big city. So I started thinking about my background and skill set, and kept circling back to real estate. It's what I know best and I enjoy it. Not residential sales - my preference would be property management, or even (those who know my feelings about commercial leases will laugh) commercial leasing - but that's where my inclinations are leading me, and they all require a broker's license.

I had a NC real estate license when we lived near Raleigh waaay back in the early 90s, but, like my FL license, I wasn't using it so I didn't keep it on inactive status for the last nearly 20 years. I'll have to take the broker's license class and the state exam all over again, which isn't a bad thing at all, since I'm nearly 20 years removed from changes in NC law and am essentially starting fresh. A nearby (very nearby) school offers two day a week classes starting in January. I haven't signed up yet - I'm going to let this thought simmer in my brain a few more days, do a little more due diligence - but somehow, this feels right.

In actual knitting news, I have a simple little cardigan from stash yarn in lovely reds that make me think of berries for Granddaughter - I have only the sleeves to go. I'm hoping it fits. I saw her last night and kicked myself for not bringing it with me for a fitting. (It's not a Christmas present - I don't do Christmas knitting.) I plan to make a hat to go with it, plus that lovely old fashioned baby bonnet from Last Minute Knitted Gifts - again, not Christmas surprises, just stuff.

She's looking so grown up to me - yesterday was her nine month birthday. She's starting to talk a little - mama and dada and hi and claps her hands, and follows everything going on around her with a serious, owlish concentration that reminds me so much of her dad.

This cold weather is EARLY and BITTER. One thing about Asheville is it's tendency to the ice storm- you're far enough south to get the lovely freeze/warmup/freeze cycles. Not loving the idea of Jan and Feb this winter.
Good luck with the job planning- it does sound like something that would fit your background. And commercial is about to undergo a lot of shifting about as companies seek to negotiate lower leases...
My dog is nestled in a comforter too. She doesn't even like her walks so much right now.

  3. Stay warm, chica. Must. knit. faster, hehehe. Love the 'create your job' idea. property management can be 24/7 so the commercial leasing may allow you to have your own life a bit more.

I have friends in Miami in the prop.mgmt. thing and it's been a challenge to say the least. your mileage may vary, of course. I guess I'm really pulling for you to have a minimal stress situation.

  5. I'm guessing property management in Asheville would be somewhat less stressful than in Miami, foreclosure and random gunfire capital of FL, which is saying something considering the competition from Orlando and Tampa.:-) There is also the property management of exiled Floridians and other retirees to balance the scales a bit, but I, too, am looking for a minimal stress situation. However it has to come with actual income, so some balanced stress may have to come with the territory.
