Relax, Internets!

Just got off the phone with our new superhero Vet Boy! (He shall be known hereafter as Vet Boy, because his age falls between Girlchild and Boychild.) The pathology report is back: Murphy does NOT have cancer. He has a very weird, rare intestinal/lymphatic thing, I'll have to get the name for it, because it has 37 syllables and a rough approximation didn't come up on the Google because it is really freaking rare. The only paper he could find on this condition is 25 years old, and said that the prognosis was "poor," so Vet Boy called around to get an opinion "that wasn't from when I was two years old." (I knew he was the same age as my kids!) Vet Boy consulted with an internist who was excited as all hell to hear about it, in that weird specialist way that gets off on weird problems. The prognosis is not "poor" these days - it's manageable. Bottom line: Murphy's already on the appropriate diet, so now we will work on calming the inflammation he's experiencing, with a different round of antibiotics and just a hint of Prednisone, and a teeny bit of Pepcid for the acid in his gut. He may have to live with flares of it as we figure out what works to keep it in check, but he does not have cancer and in the grand scheme of things, this isn't a bad outcome at all - it can still have a "poor" prognosis, but right now Murphy's appetite is great, his spunk is back, and we will just work on figuring out the magic formula to keep him feeling good.

How wonderful for you both! I am so glad it is not cancer. Murphy will do great on the medications they are thinking about. My vet did warn me to be careful not to overmedicate with Pepcid so you'll have to figure out the weight/dosage ratio. Hope you can relax a little now that you have the diagnoses! Love that dog!!

I'm so glad to hear it isn't cancer! I am quite sure that you will be able to manage his diet and take care of his little tummy. Just the fact that his spunk is back tells you how much better he feels having the thing removed! Let's hear it for Vet Boy! Wonderful news, Catherine!

Hence the "teeny" bit of Pepcid - Vet Boy was busily calculating the dosage for Wee Small Dog as we spoke. He hit 1/4 of a 10 mg. Two different antibiotics, drop the pain med because he's not hurting at all a week post-op, add prednisone - and we were already on track with the diet. And...we haven't had an explosive poop since noon.

I'm not shocked - just pleased that it's kinda what I was thinking, but also weird enough to not be obvious.

What a relief - some of the symptoms you described for Murphy were giving me flashbacks to dear old Brutus - which just shows how unreliable symptoms are without history and pathology.

Paul-the-Vet first tested for diabetes, then for pancreatitis, and then for the big-and-nasty pancreatic cancer. Really nasty and nothing you can do about it.

Now I can go and do a happy dance for you and Murphy. You will work out the details as you go along.

I just hope that the 'Best Stuff Ever' dried food is off his list.
Aren't they funny about things like that?

All the best to you both, and may the stitches come out soon.
