I knew some of this before, because my father had a book of DSC veterans and his father was in it. But lurker Gene sent me an email to this link: Chester Ray Huff. Damn. There is more in there than in the book I have - he didn't just do this once and get a medal for it - and that's just the Americam citations. I do have, somewhere, the references to his rescuing French soldiers while under fire. He was just this crazy brave skinny little Irish-American dock worker. He died young because he was so crazy brave, and the gas damaged his lungs. And I am so madly proud.
Chester Ray Huff died decades before I was born, but may I say, Grandpa, you are a hero, and I am proud to be the granddaughter you never knew.
That is so very, incredibly, amazingly cool.
