My next scarf.

The yarn is Blue Heron mercerized cotton in Kelp. The beads are Unakite. I was looking at the yarn and thinking it reminded me of something else, something in my bead stash.... Now I'm obsessed with matching beads to fibers.

I don't think these actual beads have a large enough hole to thread onto the cotton, fine as it is, so these actual beads may be combined with some silver and become a nice little necklace for the ensemble. I can find some shinier glass beads in these colors to scatter throughout the scarf, which will be Jackie E-S's Crest of the Wave.

  1. I've discovered that threading beads onto yarn is much easier if done indirectly.

First, I make sure I have a needle that will go through all or most of the holes in the beads--the sizes vary.

Then thread the needle with a length of strong thread. Tie a knot and turn the knot to the side.

Put your yarn through the loop of thread.

    Start threading beads.

This way I was able to get itty-bitty glass beads onto sport weight yarn.

  2. Oh, I love that color so...

And crest of the wave is one of my fave stitches (so feather and fan-ish, too!). It will be a beautiful scarf, beads or no.

  3. Those beads aren't right for the scarf, too heavy and too dull, but the COLOR is perfect - I will make a coordinating necklace and maybe some dangly earrings and find glass beads that coordinate with the yarn. I adore the color, and how perfect is it to use Kelp in Crest of the Wave? With sparkles?

  4. Heh. I like the idea of "Kelp" with "crest of the wave". Kind of like using the colours "cinnamon" and "toast" together.

  5. I love love love this colorway!

Do you plan to crochet on the beads or string them? I find crocheting MUCH easier! I just made some beaded wristers, go have a look...and if you need crochet method info/resources there's a tute on my sidebar and I'm just an email away :)

  6. Your crochet method is SO clever, and I already have my gram's old steel hooks in various teensy sizes, so I'm in business! I'm also tempted to rip what I've done so far with the blue cotton and add beads - I may have to do that.
