The carved details were done on site by stone masons, who stood on scaffolds and crafted from blocks of stone in place. (I am not sure that a figure this size was done in place, he appears to be four-sided so I think he was placed after carving.) The stone work is beyond description. We're lucky we can find tile setters who can get the grout lines straight these days. The Biltmore has an indoor swimming pool with underwater electrical lighting - part of the original construction. I was completely boggled at the craftsmanship of a mere century ago.
