When the zipper pull came off the graduation gown's zipper the minute she tried it on and no amount of struggle would put it back (the bottom stop was welded on with a blowtorch, I swear) I took it as a sign that this commencement thing might not be happening.
This morning Girl's alarm went off and she didn't stir, and I had been Explicitly Warned not to wake her under penalty of death, so I figured she had a backup alarm or something. So when she bolted up at 6:30 cursing like a sailor, I told her to forget it and go back to bed. I just couldn't see rushing to get ready, driving all the way across town, her having to duct-tape herself into the damn gown, and sit through an hour or so of boring graduation crap for a two minute walk across the stage. I skipped mine. I forced her brother to walk only because the ceremony was at a civilized hour and his father was mobile enough to attend and at least see his long-haired reprobate son graduate from college, and even my dad was in shape to attend, so it was an event. Girl was going to do this just to please me, and this morning it just didn't feel worth the trouble. Who the hell schedules a ceremony for 8:30 in the morning? She was supposed to be there an hour beforehand, too. It's demented. She went back to bed. I'm knitting a baby hat.
There will be cap and gown photos, she'll put it on, we will disguise the busted zipper and I'll snap a few. We're going out to dinner tonight, and she requested a cake so I'll get that. I'm very proud of her - her grades this semester were great under any circumstances but especially considering it was a summer term and those are so intense - 3 As, 1 A-, and a B. And she worked weekends all summmer too. And she's finished. Done. Whooo!
ugh - yeah... my second graduation (well third if you count highschool, lol) was originally set for 10:30 on a THURSDAY morning... now how stupid was that - on a workday?
ReplyDeleteBut 8:30 even on a weekend? thats crazy...
of course I'm of the attending graduation mindset - I never considered skipping any of mine... (well highschool I was in a class of only 50 students - it would have looked odd - and undergraduate I had to sing at - and when I got my masters, I WAS going to get to wear my hood... I was obsessed about that hood... even though I HATE yellow...I still love my hood, LOL
BUT 8:30 in the MORNING? I think that would have been enough to make me think twice for sure... Graduations tend to be disappointments anyway... (but thats a whole nother long story that doesn't need to be told in the comments of your blog, lol)
When she gets the hood she'll walk. As long as it's not at 8:30 in the morning, and did I explain that UCF is an hour away? And she had to be there an hour early? Crazy.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, both of you.
ReplyDeleteEnd of an era.
I would have gone back to bed too :)
Well she's reached another milestone. An accomplishment to be quite proud of, whether you attend the sunrise graduation or not. She's an official graduate. Yay!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to you both! Your Girl is finishing UCF, and my son is going to start in a couple of weeks. Any words of wisdom for an incoming freshman?
ReplyDeleteNeither of us went there as freshmen, I went to the U of MD and she spent most of her academic career at FSU. Sorry, it was just where we landed to finish.
