Weekend Update.

I really need to do something about my sidebar, like get rid of a lot of old links, move the archive to the bottom, and add the button for the Day in the life blog. I'm in, and love this idea. Anyone else want to jump in?

Today I stimulated the economy in many expensively unexciting ways - Petsmart and Target and Publix, oh my. I spent big bucks on algaecides and later sweated my brains out in the hot sun, trying to get the pond to quit being such a rich shade of emerald green. One of these days I'll have to surrender and get a new UV filter, but it requires reworking the whole filtration system, and it's hot out there.

There are many baby fishies! I'll try to get some pictures of them tomorrow. I was worried that the algaecide was stressing them, but they seem okay. When my late husband put the pond in about six years ago I stocked it with a dozen tiny .19 goldfish from Petsmart. I've never bought a fish since - the population has been as low as 9 (after a bad algaecide experience, which is why I'm concerned about the wee ones) and as many as 20 or so. Some of the original twelve still live, and several are absolutely huge and gorgeous.

The tomato plants are producing tiny salad tomatoes at an amazing clip, when they all ripen at once we are going to be up to our butts in tomatoes. The jalapeno in the pot is budding. The herbs, alas, aren't doing well in the hot sun, I have to move them to a more sheltered location.

It's so brutally hot, outdoor activities are not at all appealing. I'm finishing up the All Season Shawl this weekend, because I am sick of the sight of the damn thing. Then I have to think about dyeing it - it's very ecru. I have a ton of this ecru cotton left, too - enough for a bedspread, but I just can't work up any enthusiasm for acres of ecru. I had a passing thought that maybe linen would be the way to go. I have a cone of Bambu 7, but it's a bit pricey for a whole bedspread - I could get cones of Euroflax from
here for much less than the cost of the bamboo, and it'd last forever and improve with each washing. I sleep with four-legged friends, it would get a lot of improvement.

I'm still focused on using up the stash, so I'm resisting the idea. For now.

Boris is pacing and purring, requesting an early dinner. I can't think of a reason to turn him down.

What a polite kitty! Simone stands in the middle of the kitchen floor and yells. If she could put her hands on her hips, she would.

I hear ya on the washing requirements of those with four-legged bedfellows, too.

  2. thanks for the link to the euroflax, those are fantastic prices! i've been thinking about the hand towels from mason dixon knitting as christmas gifts, and that would be hugely helpful.

the shawl looks nice as it is. are you going to dye it?

  3. I haven't decided about dyeing it yet - it's kind of blah, but not in a BAD way.

And Boris is not a polite cat. He's a 20 pound monster whose purring and pacing is somehow pushy and non-stop. Higgins is the one who screams, but not for dinner. God forbid he has to go use the box when it is Unclean - he comes into the house (from the garage) and YOWLS.
