I trimmed the bougainvilla without drawing blood, which is quite an accomplishment. Roses have thorns. Bougainvillas have barbed spikes 3/4 of an inch long. Please note that the branch in this picture is over 1/2 inch in diameter.

Heh, once they grow up like mine you can't bribe anybody to take 'em out! Actually I love this plant, it blooms profusely and year round, it's really lovely. I am very proud that I trimmed it and got it into the trash can without a single scratch to my dainty self. It is no longer trying to climb in my window.
