Or at least some of it. A key person on the management staff of my company (and one I worked with most closely) up and quit yesterday. It was a shock to everybody except me - I'd had the weirdest little flash on Friday that this was coming. I can't even say why, she had never so much as hinted about it to me, I just remember looking at her last week and thinking, "She's going to quit." I didn't know when, but I felt it coming. She was the head of our department, and our department is a big chunk of the corporate staff. So this week is all about regrouping and figuring out what this will mean in terms of our operations. It may ultimately be a good thing. I'm not concerned about my job's existence but I'm somewhat concerned about what direction it will take, and I hope I have some control over it. I had two people tell me they'll kill me if I leave, they need me too much, so I'm not worried, just wondering what changes this will bring.
Meanwhile, in a rare convergence of the career planets, there are multiple construction litigation openings on Career Builder, and one of them is with the firm I interned with in the 80s. I've stayed friendly with the partner I worked for then and we've worked on matters together in the years since. I'm tempted to pick up the phone and call him, but I really want to get out of the paralegal role so I think I'll ride this job and see where it takes me.
But ooooh, I wound the Lion and Lamb last night, and I am IN LOVE. The colors that look kind of pool-y (if it isn't a word, it should be) in the skein blend delicately when it's wound, and I can't wait to start working with it. I wanted to cast on the Clapotis immediately but I restrained myself. Tonight I have nothing else on the agenda.
I almost asked the Internet for suggestions on a pattern for the Blue Heron cotton, but realized that I already have it. I have approximatly eleventy-gajillion patterns I've collected over the past several years and I'm finally getting around to finding the right yarn for some of them. I am a lace novice cursed with a gnat-like attention span, so I want something easy. A four-row repeat is my idea of "just right." In this case, I also want the yarn to do the talking, because the Blue Heron colors are so rich and dramatic, a busy pattern would be too much. So I went into my archive of patterns and in no time found: Charlotte's Easy Lace Shawl. I will probably cast on both and work on them in stages - we're already getting past Clapotis season here but that shawl would be in season year-round.
Special Knitting Olympics results: Three hats and half a sweater. I've set my own mailing date at June 1, a month before the Dulaan due date, and I intend to have at least a half dozen hats and two small sweaters in that box.
Wierd about knowing things like that - What if you could always tell - would life be better or scarier?
ReplyDeleteI frequently have "insights" for lack of a better word - but the bad part is that when it comes to people really close to me, I can't separate it from imagination. I can have one of those mother-panics over my kids, and I can't tell if it's real or just me being nuts. When it comes to my kids it's almost always me being nuts. I hate that. But in most other relationships I am seldom taken by surprise. I "felt" her making the decision to quit.
ReplyDeleteHey psychic friends make $3.99 a minute. Do the math!
ReplyDelete"Pooly" is indeed a word. The old lady in the bathing suit on Mad TV calls her pool boy by that name.
I have the feeling good things will come of this for you, one way or the other. This last nutsy period was a transition and they're always hard.
ReplyDeleteThe easy lace shawl is nice, even if it IS a Lily Chin design.
Wanted to say too that I prefer the "Deep Water" colour of the Blue Heron over your original choice. Much richer looking.
Don't know why I didn't think to clue you into this sooner - must be brain rot....rumor is this company has been head hunting pretty hard - might be interesting

Thanks! I looked at where they are building - I'm afraid the slowdown is going to hit there first and harder than it will here (we're slowing too, but only from out of control to normal). I'm afraid I'm a Florida construction wonk for life.
ReplyDeleteGeogrrl: Yes, I had the same reaction to the lace shawl - it's a good pattern, even if it's the creation of the notorious Tiny Diva. At least she didn't speed-crochet it. I love the color of the Deep Water too, though it will be a tad dark against my chalky-paleness. A bit middle-aged Goth.
ReplyDeleteHee! Yeah, if I'm not careful I can wind up looking like Elvira. Fun back when I was in my teens, but it would look a little ridiculous now.
ReplyDeleteI hope good things are on your horizion job wise!
ReplyDeleteAnother striking yet simple design you might consider for the Deep Water is Ella from Knitty. It would be stunning!
Oh, I looked at Ella - I'll have to remember that for another time. Right now I think the Tiny Diva's Lace for Dummies is the way to go. I'm creeping up on more complicated stuff. :-)
