Wilma Left in a Hurry....

and we have clear skies and chilly temps. By 2 p.m. it was all over but the wind for us, the sun came out, the temperature plummeted like 25 degrees, it's amazing. (Add "wind" to the long list of things Dudley doesn't trust. He hates rain, but don't we all? But wind - wind is scary, you can't see it and suddenly stuff falls out of the trees. He does not approve.) It's in the 50s out there right now, and that's quite a change from the "90 and humid as a muther" of yesterday.

Virtually no damage here, the power flickered briefly, it was a non-event. South Florida got smacked hard. Debi? Caroline? Give us a shout when you can.

I actually drove by my office, guilt-ridden enough to consider going to work, but the parking lot was empty and I was not about to be the only living soul in that not at all secure building. I did access the remote server and respond to email, what there was of it, because nobody was working except us Type A types. Stores and restaurants are all open and busy, the roads are fine, I saw no hurricane level damage anywhere. Lots of rain, lots of wind, a few small branches came off the trees but I think last year took out every tree ready to fall, there was nothing left to come down this season. There were tornadoes, but none right around here. There is flooding, but not right around here. We were lucky.

I worked on the top-down cardi (oatmeal stockinette, a real Plain Jane sweater) and I'm at the bottom band - soon the dreaded "picking up stitches ALL the way around the neckband" must commence. I bought the Denise needle set just for that purpose -when else do you use a size 5 needle that freaking long?

I overdid the knitting and my right hand is bothering me. I did, however, cast on for Dudley's sweater - Dudley is in love with it already, I fitted the collar around his neck to be sure it would fit and he now gets all over me when I knit it - I think he just wants to wallow in Lamb's Pride Worsted. Who can blame him? His sweater will be bright blue with red trim. Murphy's will be red with blue trim. I will try to take a picture of them in their sweaters at some point, if it's possible.

I'm already bracing myself for the onslaught of cuteness of the boys in their sweaters!
Glad Wilma hurried on her way. A knitting day with no traumatic ramifications. All right!

The boys will be darling in their sweaters. I'm so glad this was a chance for you to knit. I can just picture Dudley eagerly climbing over your lap as you knit his special sweater. Ah!! Chelle

I thought of you this morning when I was walking my granddog Stella--weren't you working on the college cardigan from the Sally Melville book? You were doing it in Encore, right, and you ditched it because it wasn't behaving like Wool Ease. Wellllll, I decided that was the perfect walking-the-dog sweater too (although I'm in Ohio, so it won't be perfect for long). Just to report--I'm knitting it in WoolEase Chunky, and I'm loving it. I've never bonded with WoolEase worsted, but somehow the chunky seems like the real thing.

Anyway, this morning, I was thinking you could use that cardigan right about now. (I was bundled up to my eyeballs, telling Stella repeatedly that she was lucky that she was so dang cute.)

Dear Catherine: I don't know if you remember me, but I'm making a sweater (or trying to anyway) from the "Softball Cotton" that you made a sweater out of a long time ago. I was wondering how it "washes up"? Do you have to handwash it? I know it says not to put it in the dryer. If you had any experience with it, and if you can remember, please let me know. My email address is luv2knit38@hotmail.com.

  5. Other Janet and Eleanor: What memories you have! I did abandon the Encore bulky version of that sweater, those ribs pulled in so tightly it would have fit like a knee sock, not a nicely baggy sweater. Let me know how yours turns out!

Sorry to say I haven't had reason to wash up the Softball Cotton yet as a finished sweater. It was a joy to work with, loved the finished product, but I can't report on its long-term washability.

I'm ok, Catherine, but then I'm still over here in Finland. I watched Wilma roll on in on German TV in Riga, Latvia. Talk about that helpless feeling... but the house is ok though the Grove is still without power. I get back on the 31st, late, so I have no idea what I'll find at the house. le sigh. Finland and Latvia sure are nice, though... Glad you and the Dudster and Daughter came through the blow ok.
    hugs,
    caroline

  7. I knew you were going to Finland but I lost track of when. I hope you emptied your fridge before you left, if you didn't I suggest rubber gloves, tongs and a trash can right nearby when you open it. :-)
