Squirrel update: The boys wisely realized that they were too busy and the college student lifestyle way too erratic to take on hand-raising a baby squirrel, so they took it to a wildlife rescue group, where it can get the care it needs. Girl is living out of her car and sleeping on friends' couches until her own apartment is ready, so there was no way she could take on a high-maintenance baby animal. So the squirrel is in good hands, and I'm glad they made that decision.
